An Eye on CEDAW in the
MEDA REGION
Jordan: Women Activists Prepare CEDAW Shadow Report

Jordan’s first-ever "shadow report"
was presented at the 39th session of the United Nations' CEDAW
Committee that took place on the 23 July – 10 August 2007.
The report was presented by a delegation of Jordanian NGOs led
by V-Day Karama Program. At this session, the government of Jordan
presented its report on compliance with CEDAW Convention. Meanwhile,
the "shadow report," prepared by Jordanian advocates
for women's rights, details the government's areas of non-compliance
and recommends policies to improve Jordan's protection of women's
legal rights and safety from violence. The prevalence of violence
against women represents one of the greatest challenges to Jordan's

Cyprus: Advocating Women’s Rights:
Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS)
In the conclusions of the first Euro-Mediterranean
Ministerial Conference on “Strengthening the Role of Women
in Society” in Istanbul, 2006, the Euro-Mediterranean partners
agreed to take measures towards enabling the full and effective
implementation of UN conventions on the human rights of women
and in particular the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms
of Discrimination against Women (the CEDAW Convention). Read
