Policy Makers and Advocates |
 |
|
| Policymakers and human rights advocates in the South
Mediterranean region have worked tirelessly to enhance
economic opportunities for women. They have and are addressing
legal inequalities. They have made considerable investment
in education and there is growing gender parity in the
school system. However, educational attainment is not
yet translating into womens economic empowerment.
Womens economic activity rates remain among the
lowest in the world, albeit with regional differences.
This issue is as serious for the national economy as it
is for womens rights and gender equality. Weak female
economic participation is known to affect the economic
growth of even advanced industrialized economies. |
